Notice to all new part-time instructors at WMU
If you are new to WMU, welcome! If not, welcome back!
The pay, benefits, working conditions, discipline and other rules and regulations for the 650+ part-time instructors at Western Michigan University are subject to the terms and conditions of the agreement between WMU and the Professional Instructors Organization (PIO). We are the union of part-time faculty at WMU and local 1903 of the American Federation of Teachers (AFT). You have a right to become a PIO member, or to refrain from becoming a member, without fear of reprisal from either the union or the university.
As a PIO member, you are automatically eligible for AFT membership benefits.
If you are a new part-time instructor at Western Michigan University, or if you are a returning part-time instructor who has not yet authorized payroll deduction of membership dues, you are obligated under the agreement between WMU and PIO to arrange for payroll deduction of membership dues or non-member agency fees no later than 31 calendar days after the start of each semester or summer session.
Our local union has adopted the Rules for Impartial Determination of Union Fees promulgated by the American Arbitration Association. Those rules may be obtained at www.adr.org, or by calling 888.774.6904. Any cost for arbitrator’s services and the cost of any proceedings before the arbitrator will be borne by the Union. Individually incurred costs will be borne by the party incurring them. While the objection is pending, the Union’s treasurer will hold, in an escrow account, that portion of the fees that are reasonably in dispute. In the event that the arbitrator determines that the objector is entitled to a greater reduction in fees than that calculated by the Union, the treasurer will issue an additional check at the close of the arbitration procedure for the balance of the reduction in fees, as determined by the arbitrator.
